A stand at the Tennant Creek show gained a helping hand last week, in what a local pollie says is a “story of second chances”.

The Country Women’s Association tea stand was helped by the Barkly Bail Support Facility, with three youths volunteering on Friday.

The youths, all on bail, were under the support of youth justice support officers and were constantly supervised.

Barkly MLA Steve Edgington said “this is a story of second chances, local partnerships and a strong community”.

“The young people at the Barkly Bail Support Facility are showing what’s possible when we invest in their future,” he said.

One of the youth justice officers helping out at the stand was working alongside staff as a youth mentor, in what Barkly Bail Support Facility staff member Kayla Costello said “shows others that change is possible, and that hard work pays off”.

“Having someone come back in this role sends a strong message,” she said.

The Barkly facility has partnerships with the Department of Education, offering youths employment pathways and access to VET training.

Corrections Minister Gerard Maley said the program was delivering results while also “holding them accountable for their actions”.

“Seeing these youths contributing positively at the Tennant Creek Show demonstrates that this approach is working,” he said.
