‘Great night’ for southern police over 24-hour period
Alice Springs police recorded a “great night” on the beat as temperatures rise in the Red Centre.
Southern Watch Commander Thomas Chalk said police responded to less than 150 incidents in the 24 hours to 6am Wednesday.
Sergeant Chalk said a typical night saw the number of incidents reported rise “well into the 200s”.
“Burglaries were down, only two reported,” he said.
“There was only one stolen motor vehicle overnight, which is also down.”
Sergeant Chalk said domestic violence call-outs were also reduced, but did not confirm how many police responded to.
He said police believed another car had been stolen.
“A second car was driving erratically in Alice Springs and we suspect it is stolen, however that’s yet to be confirmed as the owner has not contacted police,” he said.
Sergeant Chalk said police had tracked the car’s owner down thanks to the car’s registration number but were unable to contact them after they arrived at their residence.
He attributed some of the night’s success to the rising mercury in Alice Springs, including high overnight lows.
