NT cops arrest a man after he allegedly stole a vehicle with a child in the back seat in Alice Springs.

A man has been charged with abduction after allegedly stealing a car with a child in the back seat from an Alice Springs shop on Wednesday night.

On Thursday, Alice Springs detectives charged a 40-year-old man with abducting a child under 16, unlawful use of a motor vehicle, drink driving (medium range), driving unlicensed, stealing and breaching a domestic violence order.

He was remanded in custody.

“This was a great outcome from Alice Springs police officers who located the child and swiftly arrested the suspect,” Acting Commander Shaun Gill said.

“Thankfully the child was returned to her mother unharmed and in good spirits.”

Police received reports about 7.50pm Wednesday the car was allegedly stolen from Gap Rd with a young child still inside.

The child was found safe a short time later, still inside the vehicle left abandoned in Gillian.

Acting Commander Shaun Gill said members from Operation Drina, Dog Operations, Drone Unit and General Duties had been deployed to search for the car.
