A potentially historic site has been discovered near Elliot, with locals wondering what went on here during World War II.

Alice Springs: A must-visit destination in Australia

THE history books may require a new entry after what appears to be the remains of a World War II staging camp were discovered near Elliott.

The findings included a beer bottle, rusted machinery and a cement foundation with the inscription “POW 8.10.1942”.

The site was discovered by Daniel Sandy and Annette Kingston 40-50km out from the small town, which is located roughly halfway between Darwin and Alice Springs.

Elliott resident and former council president Bob Bagnall said he was excited to learn more about the discovery, which he will travel to see next week.

“The staging camps in the Territory are all pretty well documented, so it’s all a little confusing because I’m pretty sure there would not have been any prisoners of war (POWs) in this area,” he said.

“I organise the annual Anzac Day here and I’ve been involved in documenting the history of the staging camps here, and archiving the stuff in the local library for years.

“I’m extremely interested to learn what the go is here.”

The discovery comes as the Northern Territory marks 80 years since the bombing of Darwin.
