A Darwin artist has been left stranded in Alice Springs with her disabled son and injured husband after their car was torched on Friday night.
Caroline Numina, a Kaytetye Artist from Utopia who now lives in Darwin, said she had travelled to Alice Springs with her family to help care for a small boy with a broken arm.
On Friday afternoon, Mrs Numina’s husband was driving the family’s car when it crashed outside of Bradshaw Primary School.
The crash left Mr Numina with several injuries, and he is still currently in ICU, she said.
The couple decided to leave the car outside the school with hopes of returning on Monday to repair the damage, she said, until she got a call from police early Saturday morning.
“I was fast asleep, and then I get a call from police that my car had been burnt,” she said.
She said she had only purchased the car about a year ago, so she could transport her son Zac who suffers from a disability, and to return to country when she needed to.
The car was not insured and rental cars were too expensive to hire, she said.
“I just don’t know what to do,” she said.
“We had planned to go home on Sunday.
“I need to go home for my son’s appointments. He is already going to miss a couple.
“My son keeps asking ‘where is my car?’, it’s the only way for us to visit country and family.
“It’s very hard. I don’t know what to do from here.”
An NT Police spokesman said police responded to a vehicle fire on Bath St in Alice Springs about 4.20am Saturday.
He said a short time later police received reports of two more car fires, one on Gason St and one on Bromley St in Gillen.
“A crime scene was established at all three locations and a forensic assessment undertaken,” he said.
“Strike Force Viper are currently still investigating and none of the vehicles are reported to be stolen.”
