Millions of dollars in federal and Territory government funding for more police, liquor inspectors and security guards in Alice Springs is expected to drop next month.

PM Albanese confirms $250 million lifeline for Alice Springs during NT visit

Extra police, security guards and liquor inspectors will be rolled out in Alice Springs as part of a $14.2m security package.

Federal Attorney-General Mark Dreyfus announced on Friday a partnership with the Territory government would deliver millions of dollars to beef-up security in Alice Springs.

Mr Dreyfus said the two-year commonwealth funding package would fund 30 additional high-visibility police officers, 21 liquor inspectors and compliance officers and 10 security guards to patrol public areas around Alice Springs.

“We continue to work closely with the Northern Territory government to tackle crime, keep women and children safe and support young people in communities across Alice Springs and Central Australia,” Ms Dreyfus said.

It is understood the payments are set to begin next month.

The announcement is part of the $48.8m community safety package for Alice Springs, announced by Prime Minister Anthony Albanese in January.

The beefed-up security rollout comes after a Justice Reform Initiative report recommended $300m four-year commitment to alternatives to policing, diversion and prison.

The Alternatives to Incarceration in the NT report, released on Tuesday, has called for evidence-based reforms to the justice system.
