With a national push to get more people to visit public pools, Alice Springs Town Council is one of many around the country offering discounted and/or free entry to their swimming pools.
With more than 2100 pools located all over the country, not only are they a fantastic safe place to swim, but also contribute greatly to the nation’s economy, regularly generating $9 billion annually.
RJ Houston from Royal Life Saving says these pools are crucial.
“Public pools are vital for individuals and the community,” he said.
“It is important that we make everyone aware of how essential these pools are and keep them accessible and affordable.
“This will encourage more people to use them.”
Despite this, public pools are facing an upcoming crisis, with roughly 500 pools reaching the end of their life-span and in urgent need of some TLC.
“By 2030, about 40 per cent of public pools will be too old to use properly,” Mr Houston warns.
“We will need about $8 billion to replace them.
“Communities across Australia need to use these pools as much as they can now, or risk losing them.”
