2.9 magnitude earthquake rattles Central Ranges, crosses state lines

A minor earthquake has sent ripples across the country, with tremors felt across four states and territories.

Michelle Tolliday shares her experience of the earthquake felt in Darwin on January 10

A minor earthquake in the Territory sent tremors across borders to three other states.

The 2.9 magnitude earthquake rattled the Central Ranges near Yulara about 2.30am Tuesday.

With a depth of 10km, the small quake triggered a response in 16 stations across the NT, Western Australia, Queensland, and South Australia.

It comes just says after a 5.7 magnitude earthquake shook Top End residents awake on the weekend.

The quake hit about 12.30am local time on Saturday and was reported to Geoscience Australia by more than 700 people across Darwin, Palmerston, Jabiru, Katherine, Wadeye and across the border in Kununurra.

Australian folk rock legends The Waifs welcomed the extra rock ‘n’ roll for their concert at the Darwin Entertainment Centre.

“Omg Darwin, you known how to turn a seated venue into a club,” the band posted on Facebook.

“Can’t wait to come back, and a (5.7) earthquake to end the evening – Darwin, you Shake Rattle n Roll. Hoping Indonesia is safe.”

Geoscience Australia seismologist Hugh Glanville previously said the Territory’s frequent earthquakes put the NT “bang on average”.

Mr Glanville said the Territory recorded 31 earthquakes in 2022 at an average of 2.6 a month.

“For the last 10 years, 328 earthquakes were located in the Northern Territory so that’s about 33 a year,” he said.

“It seems to be relatively standard.”
