Essington School’s head of learning and development Heidi Van Bodegraven said the results reflected their students’ commitment, as well as the Rapid Creek school’s strong teaching team.
“Results are one piece of data that we look at but it’s not the only characteristic of success,” Ms Van Bodegraven said.
“We value each learner and we try to help each learner.
“We’ve talked with staff about the importance of all teachers looking at opportunities on how you can develop problem solving across all subjects.
“The enrichment program we’ve also been running for our junior school students allows them to choose a passion project like gardening, coding, cooking or mathematics – things that students can do a deep dive into but still have problem solving aspects.”
Just south of the capital, Durack Primary School had better primary results than any other Palmerston school, scoring an average of 504.6 across the five test subjects.
Palmerston Christian College and Bakewell Primary School were some other top performers in the satellite city.
Alice Springs School of the Air was the second best for the Central Australia region with an average score of 575.6, while the top performing secondary school was Our Lady of the Sacred Heart Catholic College with an average result of 582.
Nhulunbuy Christian College and Good Shepherd Lutheran College in Howard Springs took out some of the top gongs among the NT’s rural and regional schools.
Average scores were based on all five NAPLAN test subjects, while special schools, schools with fewer than 20 students, and schools who did not report any results were excluded from the analysis.
The figures were independently compiled from the federal government’s MySchool website.
