Shocking footage has captured the moment police officers and paramedics were attacked in the middle of the day on a busy highway.
Emergency services attended the Marine Parade, Labrador at Gold Coast on September 28, 2020 after paramedics were called to help a woman.
But the situation became tense when the woman’s boyfriend became hostile, with police subsequently attempting to arrest him.
This caused the man’s brother, 34-year-old Levi Hilton, and the group to become violent and attack the frontline workers.
The bodycam footage shows the group of men, police and paramedics involved in a scuffle on the Gold Coast highway, before one of the men attacked a senior constable while two others took off.
Hilton was charged following the incident and appeared at the Southport District Court on Monday.
The court heard a remorseful Hilton became violent when he saw his younger brother being arrested.
It was also told Hilton’s brother was hostile due to an alleged “delayed response time” when paramedics arrived.
Hilton pleaded guilty to two counts of seriously assaulting a police officer and one count of serious assault of a public officer.
He was sentenced to nine months imprisonment but with an immediate release on parole.
Paramedic Adam Flory, who was one of the frontline workers assaulted, said the attack was not acceptable.
“We’re here to help you, we’re not here to harm you. And we don’t want to be harmed while we’re doing our job as well,” he told media outside court.
“Paramedics generally come to work to do good … it’s not okay to verbally abuse or assault a paramedic.”
