Thousands of Mercedes-Benz owners are being urged to take their cars to get repaired after the luxury car company noticed a potentially worrying defect.

Thousands of Mercedes-Benz owners are being urged to take their vehicle in for repair after the luxury car company found a defect in one of their models.

The affected model is the Mercedes-Benz X Class from years 2018 and 2019.

According to Product Safety Australia, there are 6116 vehicles impacted by a leakage from the hydraulic line connecting on the steering gear.

The leakage “may result in the gradual loss of steering hydraulic fluid”, Australia’s consumer safety group said.

“In the event of a complete loss of steering hydraulic fluid, the steering assist function would cease completely,” Product Safety Australia warned.

“Although it would still be possible to steer the vehicle while driving, the steering will require more effort to operate, increasing the risk of an accident and injury of vehicle occupants.”

Consumers have been advised to contact their most convenient Mercedes-Benz retailer for a free of charge repair.

An additional relay circuit will be installed to avoid an increase in electrical resistance.

Mercedes-Benz discontinued all of its X-Class vehicles in Australia earlier this year.

The company’s website advised potential customers there was only “limited stock remaining”.
