The CEO of a tech start-up was left “literally shaking” when his self-driving Tesla veered onto light rail tracks in Santa Monica, in the US, just as a train began barrelling down on the EV, footage shows.
Jesse Lyu, who founded AI-powered hardware company Rabbit, posted the alarming video to X on Thursday, and claimed he had to blow through a red light to “save my life”.
“It’s just f**king crazy,” he said in the video, as the car continues past the different train stop’s platforms.
“I’ve got nowhere to go,” Mr Lyu continued in the clip, which has been viewed over 720,000 times.
“And, you can tell from behind … the train’s right here,” he added as his rear dashcam shows the oncoming train stopped about a block from his vehicle.
It was the first time Mr Lyu — left “literally shaking” — has had a problem with the car’s self-driving function.
“This time, this one time that scared the s**t out of me. That’s crazy,” he said.
Mr Lyu said he was forced to turn off the car’s “autopilot” and ran a red light at the nearest intersection to get out of the train’s path.
“I’m just trying to share this video to Tesla and the team,” he said.
“This is a serious problem, and regardless how a human reacts, the autopilot algorithm should never put any of their vehicles onto the train track. That’s just fundamentally wrong.”
Tesla did not respond to requests for comment.
