A driver is lucky to have escaped serious injuries after his car split in two following a crash.

Police said the man was driving a Ssangyong Musso ute on the Hume Highway south of Sydney when it left the road and was involved in a single vehicle crash.

Highway patrol officers arrived on the scene to find the ute was torn in two, with the front half of the car resting on its side.

A statement published by police on social media said that “whilst the crash looked quite bad at first sight, the male driver and only occupant was out of the vehicle and appeared to have only minor injuries”.

“The driver was taken by Ambulance for precautionary checks.”

Police said the incident was “a timely reminder that vehicles should not stop on the shoulder of a motorway or a highway, unless it is an emergency”.

“You just never know when a vehicle might leave the roadway.”
