Shoppers have urged the store to change it immediately. But seriously, is it such a big deal?

Americanisms here in Australia are far from uncommon.

I dare say at some point you’ve watched an American TV show or movie, eaten an American snack, and perhaps you’re even following their election.

But, according to those on social media, what this shopper has spotted in a Big W store has officially crossed the line.

“Who gave this the all clear?”

An Aussie woman took to Reddit this week to share a photo of a bizarre sign found at a Big W store.

“Big W advertising in store with American English spelling!?” the post said.

The sign reads ‘Favorite Characters’ - with ‘favourite’ spelled without the all-important ‘u’.

“What? And Why? Who gave this the all-clear. Give anyone else the ikkkk 😩😣” the post continued.

“They should be made to fix it”

Commenters on the post were fuming after seeing the mishap.

“They should be made to fix it. Take down the sign, completely redo it with correct spelling,” one person said.

“This is a shitty example for our kids!”

“I hope you corrected it with the biggest marker you could find haha,” another added.

“They need to get that sorted out pronto,” said a third.

Others took aim at the infiltration of American spelling and words into Australian culture in general, acknowledging that Big W is not the only one to have fallen victim to the movement.

“Of all Americanisations of this country spelling and grammar I will not bow to, ever. And 'candy'! 😤😆” one said.

“Ewwwwww. I said it was getting worse years ago! People online thought I was dramatic but it’s obviously happening and starting to become more prominent now,” another agreed.

“We’re slowly becoming Americanised and barely anyone notices.”

“It’s frustrating to see a lot of programs default to English (US) and they annoying red squiggle let’s you know you’ve spelt a word incorrectly ACCORDING TO THE US SPELLING, while they were actually fine in Australian,” another said.

Big W weighs in

In a statement to Kidspot, a Big W spokesperson said they were working on amending the issue.

"At BIG W, we strive to ensure consistency across our in store signage," the spokesperson said.

"There is a spelling error on that particular sign and we are in the process of changing it over."
