HUNDREDS of families lined the side of the Stuart Highway to bid farewell and good luck as the competitors in the World Solar Challenge commenced their journey to Adelaide.

And then there was this guy. Annabel Trengrove snapped this pic of a gentleman baring all at Livingstone about 9.30am on Sunday. She said it’s not the first time he’s dressed up – or down – to farewell the race participants, but his 2015 display was a little more low-key.

“He used to own a flat bed tow-truck and one year he set up there with palm trees, an Esky and what not,” she said.

“He’s good for a laugh.”

She said the drivers of the cars, as well as the rest of the usual Sunday morning traffic, all got a kick out of seeing him.

“He was on the start of a bend so you couldn’t see him for long, thankfully,” she said. “Most of the cars waved back at him and laughed. He was a bit disappointed though, he only got the one wolf-whistle.”

The leading group of five cars, made up of Solar Team Twente, the University of Michigan, the Punch Powertrain Solar Team, Team Nuon and Tokai University, were passing through Barrow Creek about lunchtime yesterday.

The first cars are expected to arrive in Adelaide tomorrow afternoon, with good weather.
