A GOLF course on an island known for methanol cocktails and pot smugglers has condemned the Territory’s official social golfing attire.

Jay Lemmon, 26, of Larrakeyah, was trying to book a tee time at Bali Handara Golf and Country Club while on holiday when he let the club know of his intentions to play in thongs.

The response was eight lines of anti-Territorian hate.

“Thongs. Seriously?” the email from resort general manager Richard T Wilson said.

“Who plays golf in thongs?

“We have a World-Class 18-Hole Championship golf course designed by 5-times (British) Open Champion Mr Peter Thomson, (and some of Thommo’s mates) Michael Wolveridge & Ron Fream. We are voted as one of the best 50 Golf Courses in the world.

“Who would wear thongs to play this golf course, or for that matter any other golf course?

“We look forward to seeing you at Bali Handara with your shoes on.”

Mr Lemmon said he was “shattered” to be told he had to dress down for the occasion.

“I’ve been playing golf three years, and I’ve only ever worn thongs,” he said.

“I guess I’ve done it so often I forgot it’s not normal.”

In another email Mr Wilson said “that we have “evolved” from the days of running around barefoot and riding kangaroos to play to golf”.

Mr Lemmon eventually boycotted Handara and played somewhere else ... where he was also asked he wear shoes.
