YOUR frequent flyer points just got a whole lot more useful.
If you’ve been trying to rack up the points to fly internationally, prepare to be rewarded.
Qantas has announced regular flyers need a lot less points now to be able to travel overseas.
To travel from Sydney to London, frequent flyers will only need 120,000 points rather than 128,000 and carrier charges will now be $708 instead of $848.
Frequent flyer points needed to travel to popular destinations in Asia, America, Europe and Africa are set to drop by 10 per cent under the airline’s new reward scheme.
Those wanting to travel between Perth and Singapore will now save 5000 frequent flyer points and $180 in charges.
An economy ticket from Melbourne to Los Angeles can be redeemed for 90,000 points and frequent flyers will only have to pay $419.32 in charges rather than $609.32.
Unfortunately for domestic flyers, there will be no changes to the Domestic Economy Classic Flight Rewards.
The new scheme for frequent flyers comes after Qantas was named the world’s safest airline for the third year running.
It was awarded the top spot by independent website AirlineRatings.com.
Qantas hopes the cut in points needed to fly internationally will keep the airline competitive.
This is the third reduction in 12 months.
“We’re always looking at new ways to help our members use their Qantas Points and
this is great news for our Frequent Flyer members, who will save up to 6,000 points and
around $190 on a flight between Melbourne and Los Angeles,” a Qantas spokeswoman said.
“We know how important Qantas points are to our members, which is why we’ve been
introducing a number of ways to maximise their opportunities to earn and redeem their
points, including recently tripling points earned for domestic travel during the holiday
period and summer months.
“January is a popular time of year for members to book reward flights as they return to
work from the Christmas break and start thinking about their next holiday, so that’s why
this change applies immediately.”
The number of points needed to fly on economy flights with American Airlines, Emirates, Fiji Airways, Air Vanuatu and Air North have also been reduced.
