MORE than 1200 tourists will spend three days in Darwin next week when the German cruise ship AIDAvita docks Tuesday morning.

The three-day stop over is a rare opportunity for local businesses in the quiet wet season to capture such a large passenger load for such a sizeable ship.

The boat is on a 21-day Singapore to Darwin to Singapore cruise, which includes stopovers in Indonesia.

The AIDAvita is a popular floating resort targeting families.

The passenger list is varied, with those on board ranging from senior citizens to middle-aged and young travellers.

The boat has 633 cabins.

The AIDAvita will return to Darwin for another similar three-day stop over on March 3.
