SOMETIMES in life, the question is: should I take the bus with all the chooks or should I fly?
We are told, if you get the flight, you are “flashpacking” – backpacking with a gold tooth.
For Adult Learning Week, Casuarina Library held a flashpacking workshop to show how to backpack without catching tinea.
Co-organiser and flashpacker Morgan George said the workshop included tips about where to look for cheap plane tickets and where to find travelling resources online.
“Backpackers have traditionally done everything as cheap as possible and are happy to stay in shared dorms with sweaty tourists,” he said.

“Where as the flashpacker likes to travel light, lighter than a backpacker and they often send things ahead through postal service, couriers and international couriers.
“And they won’t go on organised package tours. I think the great thing about flashpacking, the ethos is, it’s really up to you and it’s about prioritising.
“I have an option here, so you might go on a plane or a bus with chickens but then my budget will dictate that when I get to the other end I can go and have dinner in a fancy restaurant or I can have a cheap dinner.”
Fellow organiser Lorraine Pearce said when she was younger she did taken the chicken bus but was more into planes now.
“You’ll pay for a $100 plane ticket, say in South America, to get from A to B rather than sit on a bus with chickens and ducks and geese, goats, you know, for 24 hours,” she said.
