THE Central Land Council and the NT Indigenous Business Network have welcomed the Territory Economic Reconstruction Commission report and believe it will pave the way to improving Aboriginal lives.
The report has indicated Aboriginal people “will be front and centre of this economic development of the Territory – as land owner, developer, investor and partner, employee and community member”.
Central Land Council chief executive Joe Martin-Jard said the focus within the report on Aboriginal leadership was welcomed.
He said the report also provided enough space for people to determine how Indigenous people wanted to see development.
“We weren’t expecting it to go into great detail and having it that way gives Aboriginal people a voice to determine their own priorities,” he said.

NTIBN chief executive Jerome Cubillo said it was an exciting time ahead for Indigenous led businesses, and Aboriginal people looking to start up their own venture.
He said recommendations such as streamlining processes and providing support to help Aboriginal people to start a business would make huge improvements.
“There have been some barriers and it’s about people not knowing what options there are to start a business,” he said.
