‘Torrential’ rain expected as tropical low moves across Northern NT

THE Top End’s big deluge over the weekend, which dropped almost 100mm of rain in some areas, is expected to continue into the start of the week.
A Severe Weather Warning for damaging winds and heavy rainfall is in place for people in Gregory and parts of Carpentaria, Barkly and Tanami districts.
The Bureau of Meteorology issued the warning this morning after detecting a tropical low near Elliott in the northern Barkly District.
The low is expected to move west or southwest across the northern Barkly District during Monday and then across the Gregory District Monday afternoon or evening.
“Heavy rain which may lead to flash is occurring over the western Carpentaria and northern Barkly Districts and is beginning to ease over the eastern Carpentaria District.
“Heavy rain is expected to extend west into the Gregory and northern Tanami Districts early Monday morning.
“Widespread 24-hour rainfall totals of 50-100mm are possible across the warning area, with isolated falls of 100-200mm possible near the low.
“Locally damaging wind gusts to 100km/h are possible with thunderstorms overnight over the northern Barkly and eastern Gregory Districts, easing during Monday morning.”
Locations which may be affected include Lajamanu, Elliott, Kalkarindji, Larrimah, Daly Waters and Top Springs.

Severe weather is no longer occurring in the Daly and Arnhem districts and the warning for these districts is cancelled.

Showers and storms are forecast every day this week, with up to 40mm forecast for Darwin on Monday and up to 25mm on Tuesday before totals decrease from Wednesday.
Temperatures are forecast in the low 30s until Friday.
