Darwin mayor Kon Vatskalis said council has rolled back measures which aim to protect assets like shade sails and cricket pitches.
“We have blocked some sensitive areas, but it’s going to be passive rather than active protection,” he said.
“We also want people to do the right thing. They’re our parks and we must look after them.”

Mr Vatskalis said he was looking forward to kicking back and enjoying the fireworks. “Our kids are grown up now so we don’t have to worry about buying pack loads of fireworks, so we can sit with the family and enjoy the view of it all,” he said
Mr Vatskalis urged Territorians to “protect themselves and to protect others”.
“That’s the most important thing,” he said.
“Council will also put big bins in areas we know people congregate in order for them to put rubbish,” he said. “It was done last year and was very successful.”
