Sydneysiders in a tizz over small detail at Central Station

“This is frustrating to become aware of”

Central Station has been in the news plenty over the last few years, thanks to some hefty upgrades that have seen sweaty tunnels turned to intricate open spaces - fit for what a truly central station should be.

However, an eagle-eyed Sydneysider has taken to social media after noticing something a little out of the ordinary at one of the platforms - and once you see it, you’ll never unsee it.

What is that??

A Sydney Reddit user has taken to the platform this week to expose what looks like a mistake on one of the signs at Central.

The photo shows a sign reading the stations name on one of the platform, which should be fairly simple to execute. But, there’s one glaring ‘error’.

“Why is this ‘C’ different to the others,” the post reads.

Yep, the ‘C’ on the sign is slightly smaller than the font used on the rest of the word - and it’s going to bug me every time I go there now. Thanks, Reddit!

“This is frustrating to become aware of”

Plenty of commenters used the opportunity to crack jokes about the mishap, and just how it happened in the first place.

“cENTRAL,” one comment said simply.

“The usual C is late for his shift because of train delays. This is the apprentice c standing in. Just doing the best he can,” another joked.

“beCause they want to annoy you,” a third joked with similar spelling.

But, others really were more frustrated.

“This is frustrating to become aware of,” said one person.

“Yep, unfortunately now we all C it,” said another.

“You, bastard,” a third said.

“That is going to bug me now,” another said.

So… what is the reason?

While some people are only noticing it now, the C has been different for many years, with almost identical Reddit posts popping up every now and then.

Now, we finally have an explanation, and it all comes back to the heritage of the station.

“The small ‘C’ visible in the suspended signs on platforms 16 to 23 at Central Station is a design feature of the heritage signs that have been in use since the 1960s. There were two fonts used, one slightly larger,” a Transport for NSW spokesperson told Kidspot.

“The Central Station signs were rolled out during one of the periodic upgrades of this huge and busy station in the middle of the last century and were handmade. Our conservation work on Central is intended to take as light a touch as possible.

“Little things like this speak to the heritage of the country’s second oldest train station.”
