A NEW report has revealed the nation’s favourite caravan and camping destinations and five Territory hot spots have made the list.

A national survey by turu.com.au revealed that Ayers Rock Campground, Kings Canyon Resort, Discovery Holiday Parks Darwin, Nitmiluk National Park Campgrounds, Douglas Daly Tourist Park were the top camping and caravanning destination sites in the NT.

Victoria’s Great Ocean Road Tourist Park retained its title as Australia’s most popular holiday park.

turu.com.au general manager Robert Gallagher said “plenty of young Aussies were enjoying nothing more than a laid-back getaway in the van or the tent”.

“Empty nesters, or grey nomads, are but one part of the picture,” Mr Gallagher said.

“But now, with the likes of glamping and gramping, it’s being seen as a trendy thing to do again. Camping is cool.”

Discovery Holiday Parks Darwin managers Shane and Mim Conquer said ‘grey nomads’ and families on holidays were their main clientele.

“We don’t see too much glamping but I have seen a bus with a carport underneath that opened up and two cars came out, I guess that was glamping,” Mr Conquer said.

Retirees Katrina and Kevin Alexander leased their farm in Central Victoria and have been travelling Australia in their caravan for more than two years.

Ms Alexander, 53, said it was cheaper to stay at a national park or truck stop than a caravan park.

“It’s about $6 per night at a national park and about $55 per night at a caravan site,” she said.

She said life as a grey nomad was so good she often lost track of the days.

Mr Alexander said Darwin was “a lovely spot” to stay.

“I like all of the historic stuff,” he said.
