The viral frock is selling out fast, thanks to looking a lot more expensive than it actually is. 

Fashion-conscious shoppers on a budget are rushing to buy a midi dress from Kmart that has been hailed the 'perfect' summer and wardrobe staple.

The craze started after a New Zealand-based woman named Catherine Cater wore the frock in a series of outfit videos on her TikTok account.

Despite saying she wears it while working from home, others have claimed it's a versatile piece for any occasion.

The $12 Kmart dress going viral on TikTok

Light, loose-fitting and ideal for warm weather, the $12 Sleeveless Scoop Back Midi Dress from Kmart can be dressed up or down by switching accessories, adding heels and jewellery for an evening look and sneakers and a hat for everyday wear.

Available in both a fiery red and a classic black, it comes in sizes six-20.

The dress features a scoop neck that's mirrored at the back, a stretchy bodice, gathered waist and a lined, flowy skirt. And yes, it's midi length — bang on trend.

The reviews are in on the website, and they're GLOWING. 

One shopper gushed, "Love this dress! Great fit, perfect length and looks great. It's a beautiful colour of red. Can be dressed up or down."

Another agreed, saying, "This dress is so figure-forgiving and flattering, and I also love the scoop neck, it's refreshingly different."

"I feel put together"

Catherine rocked the black version in her latest video.

"It's a hit, mainly because it's from Kmart and is $12. Sh*t do I feel put together," she begins while showing off the dress.

"This is pretty intense for a work-from-home outfit but also not really because it's summer and it's just easy to wear. I just chucked it on. Very flattering and chic."

She paired it with strappy black sandals, a brown handbag, a pearl necklace, and sunnies for an elevated look.

In another video, she also showed off how the red version of the dress made its debut on Christmas Day, and let's just say, it's an absolute showstopper and looks a lot more expensive than it is. 

She wore the same pearl necklace but switched shoes to tan sandals to better match the dress. "Can you believe this is from Kmart? Run!" Catherine exclaimed while trying on the dress with different accessories, including a straw hat.

The reaction in the comments has been intense, as shoppers realise the dress seems to be selling out everywhere. 

"Went to my local Kmart today and they only had a few sizes left! EEEK," someone shared.

Another wrote, "Okay, running there ASAP but I'm not getting my hopes up," replied another. "Only a few sizes left online."

Others complimented Catherine on the dress, with one person saying, "This is absolutely gorgeous! Looks so good on you!"
