TOURISTS visiting Uluru were treated to a shower of rain as water ran down the iconic monolith.

Visitors walking around the base of the ancient site had to don ponchos or put up with wet weather after 13mm fell in the last 24 hours.

The downpour was the second this week at Uluru after 23mm fell on Sunday.

But weather bureau senior forecaster Graeme King said the rain wasn't unusual for this time of year.

"(The region is) in Spring storm season," he said.

"It's not uncommon."

Five hours north in Alice Springs another group of visitors, the English cricket team and the Barmy Army, were getting wet too.

"There was one storm after another coming in," Mr King said.
Lucky for cricket fans the storms will ease for the two day match in the red centre.

"They should be able to get two days in.

"We think storms will be much less active (Friday and Saturday) with temperature from 36 to 39C.”

Tennant Creek will be the next area to experience showers and storms while Ex Tropical Cyclone Alessia keeps the whole Top End active.

Darwin and surrounds will have some hot nights with afternoon storms but remain fairly dry.

"That should last through to Sunday for the Christmas Carols."
