DARWIN’S proposed rainbow garden may be moved to a more suitable location, with the Daly St and Smith St intersection deemed unsuitable.

The rainbow crossing, which has become a fixture at the intersection of Smith and Knuckey streets was set to remain for another year.

Instead, Darwin council is set to support the rainbow garden to be planted some 200m down the road on the Esplanade/Daly St roundabout.

The tree in the middle of the Smith St roundabout had proved problematic in planning, with canopy cover and the location of roots restricting not only the amount and type of flowers that could be used but also public visibility of the garden.

Darwin Pride members Andrea Wicking and Jenny Smith said the new location would make for a better garden and were thankful for council’s consideration with the matter. “(We) see the rainbow roundabout at the end of the Stuart Hwy as an upgrade,” they said.
