It’s a croc-eat-croc world – with one reptile ending up as an unwilling passenger despite being dead for days.
Drone footage captured by local fishers Megan White, Bree Martin and Hydee on 24 November shows a saltwater crocodile – estimated to be at least 4.5m long – towing another saltie through the Corroboree Billabong.
The male croc being hauled, which the fishers believe had been dead for days, was extremely
bloated and had suffered fatal lacerations to his head and neck region.
The three fishers – who were fishing off their 4.9m boat – were initially unaware of both crocs, Ms White said.
“We could smell something dead, and then I saw something white 200m away and thinking ‘Oh a croc just pulled a big cow in’,” she said.
“Then I saw a big splash and a croc eating something.”
The fishers then sent their drone up to investigate, expecting to find the saltie dining on a buffalo.
They were stunned to discover the croc was instead feeding off another croc.
The saltie then dragged his meal past their boat – an act that Ms Martin described as “showing off.”
The sight was a first for the three fishers, Ms White said.
“The fishing was a bit slow that morning, we weren’t getting much at all so we were a little
surprised,” she said.
“Definitely not what we expected to see that day.”
Ms White said they followed him with the drone as he dragged it for 200m through the billabong.
“He then stuffed the croc in some Pandanus and we left him alone.”
Ms Martin said the sight was fascinating.
“It was just real interesting to see him parade it down the billabong like he owned the joint,” she said.
“He was pretty puffed up.”
