THE races give people an opportunity to show their fashionable and there was no shortage of creativity this year.

Bruce ‘Bark Man’ Riley has designed his own Cup Day outfit for 14 years using found objects.

This year he donned a palm tree bark suit lined with a matching bark top hat-crown adorned with fossils and coral.

“I ride a pushbike up and down the beach,” he said.

“I find stuff and take it home and see what I come up with for the Cup.”

“He takes months and weeks to generate a different hat every year,” said Cup companion Joy Rekas.

He also made Ms Rekas’ fascinator, a palm tree bark creation spray painted silver and embellished with bougainvillea flowers.

Each year Mr Riley enjoys people’s reactions to his outfit.

“I get a lot of comments all day,” he laughed.

“People appreciate what I do.”

Michael McIntyre and husband Simon came to the Top End to escape the Melbourne winter.

To mark Simon’s first Darwin Cup, the couple decided to wear matching tropical rompers.

“I bought these for our one year wedding anniversary,” Michael said.

“You’ve got to match it with a statement piece but then also practical,” Simon said.

“That’s the vibe I get from Darwin, you're making a statement but you’ve also got to be real.

“We also like to say this is my nan’s old couch and we didn’t have room for it in the apartment so we turned it into an outfit.”

The couple accessorised with colourful, leopard patterned beads.

"It shows we've been out in Kakadu for a few days.” Simon said.
