'I take some of my children's birthday and Christmas money'

“Every time our kids get money, we skim a little bit. And before you come at me in the comments for being a criminal parent, I’m going to tell you exactly why.”

When my kids get birthday money I take some before they recieve it

A mum has revealed she takes a portion of any money her kids receive on their birthday or Christmas, but not all is as it seems.

The Sunreports Janice Curnew hopped on TikTok to reveal she takes the money from her children to help them in the future.

“Every time our kids get money, we skim a little bit,” she said.

"Start today and make them set some money aside"

Janice said that rather than letting her children keep all of their money, she takes a portion and puts it in a “high-interest savings account”.

If they are given $20, she’ll take $5 for the account and give them $15. Janice says this method should help her children avoid debt in the future.

The Sun reports Janice also takes money from her children’s jobs such as babysitting and paper routes to the tune of 20 per cent, also for the savings account.

She clarified that any money that does end up in her children's hands can be spent however they want, as “money is there to be spent”.

“If your kid is 15, you can still be doing this,” she said on TikTok.

“Start today and make them set some money aside, because they are going to need it.”

The Sun reports Janice’s video has since gone viral, with more than 1.3 million views and thousands of comments.

"It adds up so fast"

One person said they went even further than Janice’s idea.

“We actually take all of our kids’ money and put it straight into savings,” they said.

“It adds up so fast.”

“We do this too,” wrote another person. “We take 70 per cent of each of their paychecks and it goes into savings.

“No one taught me to save, and uni is so expensive, so this is how we help them.”

A third person added: “I wish my parents had done this”.
