'Daycare lost my toddler, but I wish they hadn't told me'

"I lose my kid more than once a day in our own home," one parent tried to reassure the dad. Do you think the daycare should have said anything?

Daycare pick up should be a joyous time of parents re-uniting at the end of the day with their kids.

But as anyone who has done it will know, it can be an anxious time if you're pulled aside "for a quick chat", and you wonder, "What's happened now?"

This was the experience of one dad this week, who was told by his daughter's daycare that they had lost her during the day - but all was fine now.

"They briefly lost my child"

The man wrote about his experience in an online parenting forum, because he wasn't sure how to feel about the situation.

"I just got a call from my daycare stating that they briefly lost my child," he wrote.

"She wandered from where they were playing [in the centre] into an empty classroom. They found her in there playing. They reported to me that she must have been gone for approximately 90 seconds."

Sounding shaken after the conversation, the dad was feeling anxious and not sure if "90 seconds" was a big deal.

He finally asked, "If you were in my position, what safeguards or measures would you take? I'm unsure what to do going forward."

Commenters sided with the daycare

Surprisingly, the comments section was not full of outraged parents, but experienced ones.

"If you believe them, then this seems like a win. She just went in another room and was nabbed in under two minutes… I can’t deliver that in my own house," one mum wrote.

Others reminded the dad that they hadn't needed to report it at all, but chose to.

"This is actually rather reassuring, if you think about it," said one, whilst another added, "They definitely did not have to report this as it was quite minor. It was under two minutes, and it was indoors, not outside.

"A lot of other places would not have even bothered to have reported this and they did so promptly."

There were also comments that the experience boded well for future situations.

"It also means the expectations and safety measures at that day care have high standards," a parent pointed out.

As to how the dad should feel moving forward, there was plenty of reassurance offered.

"I would just say thank you for informing me and try not to worry about it. They sound like they are on top of things and will likely be even more vigilant now that this incident happened," one wrote helpfully.

Another added, "I think I'd chalk this up to them doing the best they can and it being a rare but inevitable thing with multiple kids.

"The space is (I assume) pretty well child-proofed for that reason, she didn't leave the actual premises, and they found her immediately."

This parent suggested, "Maybe ask what they've changed to ensure that this doesn't happen again, but I'd be reassured about how they handled this."

And of course, dozens of parents shared what happened when their own escapee ninjas slipped out of their sight.

"Yep! I 'lost' my kid in my own house and ended up calling the police," a mum shared.

"And he was the only child home at the time."
