To her students at The Lakes College north of Brisbane, Year 1 teacher Suzanne Walker is “kind and helpful”, and “she makes us happy”.
It’s a touching reminder of why Mrs Walker became a teacher 20 years ago – the passion to make students feel valued, appreciated and supported in their learning.
Two of her students, Isla Kurzydlo and Ivie Rogers, both aged 6, wrote letters and drew beautiful pictures for Mrs Walker this week as part of News Corp’s Australia’s Best Teachers series.
The letters were specially designed for the series by campaign partner Officeworks.

“The children wrote some very sweet and thoughtful letters, along with some lovely drawings and decorations,” Mrs Walker said.
“In their letters they were expressing how they loved school, appreciated being treated with kindness and given help when they need it.
“It was lovely to see what they wrote and it made me feel appreciated through the thought and effort they put into them.”
Mrs Walker was inspired to pursue a career in education by one of her primary school teachers in New Zealand.
She prioritises creating a connection with her students and their families.
“I couldn’t tell you what grades I got or what reading group I was in, but I do remember how (my primary school teacher) made me feel valued, appreciated and supported, this is what I hope for the children in my class too.”
