Aussie mum stunned by neighbour's 'dangerous' backyard act

The Melbourne mum was making a lasagne for dinner when she spotted the potential danger out her window.

Backyard blaze: my neighbours burned something massive in their backyard

An Aussie mum was left in shock when she saw fierce flames burning in her otherwise “quiet neighbourhood”.

Yahoo News reports VonnieM was in her Melbourne home cooking a lasagne for dinner on Sunday evening when she saw flames burning above the fence line in her neighbour’s backyard.

The flames reportedly came extremely close to her home and a large tree in the backyard, casting a bright orange glow outside her windows.

“We saw big flames just on the other side of our fence,” VonnieM told Yahoo News.

“It was very strange because they were so tall.

“My husband and I were concerned because it was close to the fence line and near a big tree … I think that’s a little bit dangerous.”

She later learned the fire, which Yahoo News reports lasted for more than 20 minutes, was started by her neighbours as a way to get rid of an unwanted couch.

VonnieM said the neighbours were standing close to the flames “keeping an eye on it”, and were more than happy to answer questions when she asked what they were doing.

This isn’t the first time VonnieM’s neighbours have rubbed her up the wrong way. Just weeks before this video, the mum recorded another video sharing her excitement that her “noisy” neighbours appeared to be moving out.

Turns out the neighbours' impromptu fire didn’t only draw the annoyance of VonnieM, it could have gotten them in strife with their local councils.

Yahoo News reports permission to start backyard fires varies between different council areas and states, but the council in northeast Melbourne where the fire occurred banned the practice.

“In accordance with Council’s Local Law, we can issue permits to residents that allow them to burn off green waste, such as grass, tree branches and untreated wood,” a spokesperson from Banyule City Council told Yahoo News.

However, any other type of burning, or burning green waste without a permit, can result in a $400 fine.

Yahoo News reports Banyule City Council is investigating the fire.
