A manhunt is under way for a shooter which has forced a city into lockdown after a woman was found dead.

A major police operation is under way in a north Queensland city after a woman was found dead after a shooting incident.

Emergency services were called to Robb Place in South Mackay just after 4.30pm Wednesday.

It is understood a woman has been shot in the head.

Police arrived to the scene to find the woman already dead and a man with non-life-threatening injuries to his hand.

"Police now hunting for the male shooter"

Queensland Police have declared an emergency situation under the Public Safety Preservation Act locking down the area encompassing Robb Place, Paradise Street, Archibald Street, Kindermar Street and Denton Street.

Police are now hunting for the male shooter.

Members of the public are reminded to avoid the area and those within the exclusion zone are asked to remain indoors until further notice.
