SO that's how the elephant got his trunk!

These amazing pictures have remarkable echoes of Rudyard Kipling's famous children's story which tells how the animals got their trunks after a crocodile grabbed a baby elephant's nose and kept pulling it.

This young elephant got more than he bargained for when he approached a water hole to take a drink.

He didn't appear to see a waiting crocodile as he ambled over to the watering hole in the South Luangwa National Park in Zambia.

But as soon as he dipped his trunk in the water, it was grabbed by the sneaky croc.

But even though the elephant still had a lot of growing to do, the croc had bitten off more than he could chew.

The astonished bull elephant was able to whip his trunk out of the saltie's jaws with not much harm done.

The remarkable scene was captured by amateur wildlife photographer and general manager of a safari lodge, Ian Salisbury, 62.

He said the action was all over in a matter of seconds.

Kipling, the author of The Jungle Book wrote The Elephant's Child, How the Elephant got his Trunk, in 1902.
