Health Minister Natasha Fyles said the COVID-19 patients were transferred from the Royal Darwin Hospital to the Howard Springs camp which had previous been used as a quarantine facility for Australians returning from overseas.
“We have seen patients shifted to that facility, there are now about half a dozen patients being cared for at Howard Springs that are diagnosed with COVID-19,” Minister Fyles said.
“This is a clinical decision, remembering that about 80 per cent of people diagnosed with coronavirus will have a relatively mild illness so they can be cared for at the Howard Springs facility under medical care.
“But if they need to transferred to Royal Darwin Hospital they can be.”
The former Howard Springs Inpex workers’ camp was reopened last week to isolate people who test positive for COVID-19 in the NT, after it was previously used to quarantine hundreds of Australian evacuees from Wuhan, China and the Diamond Princess cruise ship in Japan.
