Meghan and the queens of the real mum club

Despite the endless criticism around Meghan, Duchess of Sussex, there’s one thing she is the queen of, and that’s the real mum club — unlike other A-listers, including her sister-in-law.

Meghan and Harry christen baby Archie: First photos released

Despite the endless criticism around Meghan, Duchess of Sussex, there’s one thing she is the queen of, and that’s the real mum club.

Unlike other A-listers — including her sister-in-law — who miraculously return to their pre-baby-weight in six weeks, the newest royal has been in no hurry to get her body back.

Twelve weeks after the birth of Archie, Meghan is slowly shedding her baby weight in the same way normal new mothers do and has become the duchess of “fourth trimester dressing”.

This is the period between giving birth and fitting in to your old clothes — a tricky time when the last thing you want to wear is the maternity clothes you have lived in for the past six months, but your old wardrobe doesn’t fit either.

Meghan has sported the kind of roomy smocks new mums adore, such as the green linen Lisa Marie Fernandez dress she wore to the polo in July. And the black Jason Wu dress she wore to the premiere of The Lion King in London last month showed she was determined to embrace her curves.

“It’s positive to see Meghan take a more realistic approach to post-partum weight loss,” says Emily Taylor, editor of InStyle — whose own son was born three days after Archie.

“I don’t envy Meghan being photographed weeks after giving birth — my biggest maternity leave wardrobe concern is whether I can get away with wearing a pyjama top to Woolies.”

Here are other celebrity mums who keep it real:

Beloved on social media for her straight-talking approach to motherhood, Chrissy Teigen, 33, is open about weighing more after having two kids. “I am 20 pounds (9kg) heavier than I was before Miles,” she wrote on Twitter. “I never lost the last bit because I just love food too much.”

ANNE HATHAWAY

Last week she announced she’s expecting her second child — but when Anne Hathaway, 36, gave birth to son Jonathan, she posted a photo of her cut-down jeans on Instagram, writing, “There is no shame in gaining weight during pregnancy (or ever). There is no shame if it takes longer than you think it will to lose the weight (if you want to lose it at all). There is no shame in finally breaking down and making your own jean shorts because last summer’s are just too dang short for this summer’s thighs.”

KATE WINSLET

The famously frank actor, 43, is critical of celebrities who get their post-baby bodies back super-fast. “When I read things like that, I just think, ‘Oh, for f …’s sake, that’s actually impossible,’” she said. “My body will never go back to what it was and I wouldn’t expect it to after three babies.”

PINK

After the birth of second child Jameson Moon, Pink, 39, posted a picture on Instagram writing, “Would you believe I’m 160 pounds and 5’3”? By ‘regular standards’ that makes me obese. I know I’m not at my goal or anywhere near it after Baby 2 but dammit I don’t feel obese. The only thing I’m feeling is myself. Stay off that scale ladies!”

The actor, 31, who is expecting her third child, has always been open about how hard it is to shift baby weight – following the birth of second child Ines, she posted on Instagram, “Turns out you can’t lose the 61lbs you gained during pregnancy by just scrolling through Instagram and wondering why you don’t look like all the bikini models.”

DREW BARRYMORE

The 44-year-old actor, who keeps it real on social media with make-up free photos, is open about how her body changed after having two kids. “It’s hard to stay positive and love yourself,” she said. “You feel like a kangaroo with a giant pouch, everything’s saggy and weird.”

JENNIFER GARNER

In 2014 Jennifer Garner, 47, had to address pregnancy rumours because she still had a bump. “I am not pregnant, but I have had three kids and there is a bump,” she told Ellen DeGeneres. “From now on, ladies, I will have a bump. It’s not going anywhere. Its name is Violet, Sam, and Sera.”
