MAGNT’s Exit Art exhibition crowns its people’s choice award winner

A vibrant self-portrait inspired by the works of Gustav Klimt has claimed the People’s Choice award at the Museum and Art Gallery of the NT’s Year 12 Exit Art exhibition.

A VIBRANT self-portrait inspired by the works of Gustav Klimt has claimed the People’s Choice award at the Museum and Art Gallery of the NT (MAGNT)’s Year 12 Exit Art exhibition.

Persona 2020, by Essington School student Marinelle Juan, explores the theme of identity, including by using traditional Filipino illustrations in a nod to the artist’s heritage.

Marinelle said she was thrilled with the recognition.

“I feel ecstatic! And pleasantly in disbelief. I also feel humble, proud, honoured and a whole lot of other synonyms,” she said.

MAGNT director Marcus Schutenko said Marinelle’s artwork had been a “standout favourite”.

“The canvas painting is a testament to the student’s self-identity and connection to her Filipino heritage,” he said.
