DARWIN women are bucking the trend by hopping on Neuron’s eScooters, making up 55 per cent of all riders in Darwin.

According to Neuron data, it makes Darwin the only region in Australia with more female riders than male riders, with their safety and convenience making for an attractive mode of transport for women and contrasting a global micromobility gender gap.

Mercedes Lysaght said it was no surprise women enjoyed riding eScooters in Darwin, allowing for easy shopping trips and nights out.

“They have many benefits for women in particular. I feel safer riding home alone at night rather than walking,” she said.

“I’m in control of my journey and with the Follow My Ride feature, there is a tracking system in case anything happens which is important, especially as a woman.”

Ms Lysaght said the stability and accessibility of eScooters in the city meant she could enjoy a quick trip to the shops for some retail therapy or a meal and could do so in style.

“If I’m having dinner on the other side of town, for example the waterfront, I prefer to use an eScooter over a taxi, and you can easily scoot back up to the city,” she said.

“It’s great for local businesses because I usually always buy something when riding e-scooters, especially dinner at restaurants. I love that when I am in the city I can jump on an eScooter without needing to change my clothes or shoes.”

HOT NEW DEAL: $1 for 28 days subscription offer

Locals are embracing the eScooters, with 88 per cent of all female riders living in the Darwin suburbs, rather than being visitors staying in the city.
