Darwin’s street murals will become a key part of the city’s tourism focus as part of a new self-guided tour map.

The Darwin Visual Arts Association initiative will take visitors on an art trail, stopping at 11 Darwin artworks including two fibreglass termite mounds outside the DVAA’s office, painted by local artists including Alicia Scobie.

“I think it’s really important to have the visual arts of Darwin visible to all, I find the creative arena in the NT gets forgotten about a little bit,” Ms Scobie said.

“To have project that’s part of tourism and part of activating Darwin is really important because we need to support all of our artists in the Northern Territory.”

Darwin Lord Mayor Kon Vatskalis said the murals had proved to be highly popular.

“I have a lot of people who come to Darwin for the first time and I expect them to talk about the sunset and the Esplanade and they mention the big mural of the Aboriginal warrior … and they tell me they love to see things like that in our city,” he said.

“We’ve got something right there so we’ll continue it now and in our city … (but) the only way to see them now is by word of mouth or (now to) get a map.”

Mr Vatskalis said he would like to see more murals established across Darwin, reflecting the cultures of those who immigrated to Darwin from non-English speaking backgrounds, capturing the diversity of Darwin’s people.

The self-guided walking tour uses a map of the CBD and Waterfront, and provides information and an explanation of each piece.
