Choosing the right pet for your family is tricky business. 

If a puppy or a rescue dog is something you've been thinking about, a dog expert has shared his top breeds that are consistently a great choice for children.

Best dog breeds for families

When it comes to dogs, dog behaviourist Will Atherton (aka @iamwillatherton) says there are four specific breeds that he's a big fan of for families with young and older children. 

The breeds that top his list are golden and labrador retrievers, Staffordshire bull terriers, and Newfoundland dogs.

“Now, if you’re bringing a dog into your home and you have children, that means it’s an incredibly important decision to make sure that you’re keeping your children safe," he explains in the post.

“As a canine behavourist, I work regularly with dogs that have assaulted and attacked children in the household, and it’s an absolute disaster which must be avoided at all costs.

"By choosing the right breed in the first place, you can reduce the risk by a huge percentage."

Dogs that are brilliant with children

Will goes on to explain why retrievers, staffies and Newfoundlands are his favourites. 

“All notorious for being brilliant with children, and are incredibly easy to train and fit into a family lifestyle beautifully," he says.

The admission had plenty of his 857K followers chiming in with their thoughts. 

“Yes my golden is so gentle and calm," one person shared. 

And another agreed with the point that golden retrievers are great with kids.

“My golden thinks my kids are HIS babies," they laughed. 

And another shared: “Picking up our Newfie pup next week. Picked him specifically because of how great they are with kids. Thanks for affirming our choice."
