Postpartum Depression is something many new mums experience, watching everyone around them dote over their baby whilst inside, they’re crumbling.
But, whilst it’s most commonly occurring in mums after birth, it can impact anyone, like surrogates, adoptive parents, and even dads.
On tonight’s episode of I’m a Celebrity… Get Me Out Of Here!, retired AFL great Zach Tuohy shares his own experience with Postpartum Depression, and it’s heartbreaking to say the least.

“I don’t think it’s super healthy in the real world”
Speaking to former Brisbane Broncos captain Sam Thaiday, Zach opened up about his experience after his first child was born, when he was just 24.
The Geelong star said his mindset from footy didn’t quite translate over to how he should have been coping with ‘real world’ problems.
“I think I have a bit of a mindset that’s really good for football, but just terrible for the real world, which is ‘shut up and get on with it’, that was kind of my approach to everything,” he said.
“That’s great when you’re sore, and you need to train, but I don’t think it’s super healthy in the real world, when you’re struggling like that.”
Zach said that in the year after the birth of his son Flynn, he would frequently break down, forcing himself to recover quickly so as to not open himself up to judgement from others.
“I’d be crying in the car, and just wait until that feeling left, and then I’d be like, ‘Right, just get on with it now. You’re fine, get over it’,” he said.

“That’s a chick thing!”
Recently, Zach opened up about his experience for the first time in his memoir, Zach Tuohy – The Irish Experiment, only confiding in his wife about it shortly before its release.
It was only in the process of writing that he realised Postpartum Depression was even a possibility for men.
“It was only when I wrote that and spoke to people about it that they were like, ‘Have you ever thought you had Postpartum Depression?’,” he said.
“I was like ‘That’s a chick thing!’, but it turns out, it’s not… I just thought I had good old-fashioned depression.”
Around 1 in 10 men experience Postpartum Depression, compared to 1 in 7 women.Viewers can catch Zach’s full emotional conversation with Sam in tonight’s show.
