Iconic Aussie beer brand XXXX announces the launch of new alcoholic ginger beer

The famous Queensland beer brewer has revealed it is launching a new drink - the first of its kind for the brand.

Iconic Queensland brewery XXXX is adding another drink to its repertoire with the launch of its first ginger beer.

The beverage brand, which is best known for its beers, announced it would be dipping its toes into the ginger beer category with its XXXX Ginger Beer, which with a 3.5 per cent ABV is one of the lowest alcoholic drinks on its menu.

XXXX field director Pat Donohue said the Queensland company recognised the increasing demand for alcoholic ginger beer as Australians search for a “near beer” alternative.

A “near beer” drink is a malt beverage that contains a less beer-centric taste and has very low alcohol content, which has become increasingly popular among Australian consumers - especially Gen Z drinkers - who are hoping to consume less alcohol.

A 2024 Australian Institute of Health and Welfare study found that alcohol consumption had dropped 30 per cent compared to 2010, with research from the Cancer Council indicating the interest in non-alcoholic beverages was increasing, particularly among younger generations who are interested in trying the beverages without the effect of alcohol.

Per the report, more than 30 per cent of consumers were purchasing no-alcohol drinks including beer, cider, wine and ready-to-drink (RTD) beverages.

“Over our 146-year history, XXXX has continued to evolve to reflect the way Australians like to drink,” Mr Donohue said.

“Crafted with real ginger juice, it delivers a crisp, refreshing taste with a 3.5 per cent ABV. We’re confident it will resonate with beer lovers and ginger beer enthusiasts alike.”

The new brew aims to “blur the line” between beer and other drinks, including cider and other RTD.

“We know there’s a growing appetite for ginger beer and options for those looking to moderate their alcohol intake and we’re excited to introduce our own take on that,” he said.

“We wanted to create something that not only delivers on flavour but also offers an easy drinking option.”

The new range of XXXX Ginger Beer is now available for purchase in liquor stores Australia-wide, with prices starting at $28 for a six-pack and $89 for a case.
