'I lost my confidence after having kids': The Voice mum Michaela braves the stage

Mum Michaela wasn't sure if the big stage was for her - until she got 4 (very fast!) chair turns.

The Voice contestant Michaela gets a 4-chair turn during Blind Auditions

Despite coming from a musical family, mum Michaela Jayde didn't know what to expect when she stepped on stage for her blind audition for The Voice.

She barely got out the first note of The Jackson 5's 'Who's Lovin' You?' when Guy Sebastian smashed his buzzer to turn his chair and his fellow coaches were immediately behind him.

"It really did mean a lot. I think mine was one of the fasted chair turns too and it was exciting," the 36-year-old mum tells Kidpsot.

"I didn’t know what to expect. I was just hoping for just one chair turn and I genuinely didn’t know what would happen."

It's Mum's turn now

It was the confidence boost this mum-of-two needed after putting her singing career on hold to raise her children, now eight and five.

"I had kids and gigs really slowed down during that period. Obviously, that happens when you’re a mum. My priorities recalibrated and it was the most beautiful time and I really really enjoyed it, but in terms of my music career, it definitely took a back seat," she recalls.

"100 per cent I lost my confidence for sure after having my kids. The shift of priorities was a beautiful thing for me. It was a choice that I made and it wasn’t out of resentment. It was just a natural thing that happened when I had kids."

But when Michaela thought about going back to work, a reality TV show like The Voice was far from her mind.

"My aim has never been to be famous. That’s why I think I’ve never launched myself into being on a show like this," she insists.

"I think early on in my career I really felt like I was happy doing the organic building of my career and I never saw myself as being famous or launching myself in a big arena before I was ready. I didn’t think I could do something like this."

Hoping to inspire parents to follow their dreams

It's a thought that crosses the minds of far too many new parents and Michaela hopes to inspire other mums and dads out there to pursue their dreams.

"I think it’s common for parents and specifically the primary carer - usually the mum," Michaela says.

"I had kids at a time that is considered your peak years as a woman in the music industry, I lost those years and when I came back to the music scene, I felt irrelevant in a way and I couldn’t keep up with my peers who were powering on during that time.

"It was something that I chose and enjoyed for that time but as a result of putting my career aside, it naturally made me lose a sense of my identity as a songwriter and as a lead vocalist."

As she is blown away by the coaches' reaction during her audition, Michaela explains how she was the only one holding herself back from achieving her dream. And by stepping on stage again, not only is she doing something for herself, but also showing her children - and other parents -to never give up on their dreams.

"I took [my kids] on the journey with me. As soon as I told them that I was able to go on The Voice, they came with me to the blind audition with my husband Bryce and they’ve been really excited," she says.

"It’s been our little secret so it’s really cute. I’m really proud of them, they didn’t tell anybody."

Well, now everyone knows how good you are so go get it, mama!

The Voice will continue Sunday 7.00pm on Channel 7 and 7plus
