AN American man has gone to extraordinary lengths to farewell his dying dog, a mixed breed Labrador named Poh.
Poh’s owner Thomas Neil Rodriguez told ABC News that he and his fiance decided to take the 15-year-old pooch on a cross-country road trip after vets told him that the dog was only expected to live for a few months because of multiple health issues.
The New York-based Rodriguez created an Instagram account documenting Poh’s travels which caught the attention of dog-lovers around the world. Some of the images show the former rescue puppy in a special green travel buggy.
The trio visited 35 cities and traversed more than 19,000 kilometres over seven weeks, taking in North Carolina, Texas, New Mexico, Oregon and Arizona before reaching California.
Rodriguez said Poh had a great time splashing about in the Pacific Ocean.
“He loved it, it was so healing for him. It was like he was five years younger. He was walking with a lot of energy.”
The good news is that Poh is still alive.
“My assumption is that I don’t have very long with him and that’s what prompted the trips,” Rodriguez told ABC News.
“I’m always travelling, but Poh is my home, my child. I am super blessed that I have actually gotten to do this.
“People think I take care of Poh, but Poh takes care of me.”
