MANY say pitbulls are dangerous animals but deaf teen Nick Lamb owes his two-year-old pit bull his life after the animal saved him from a house fire.

Officials in Indianapolis say Nick, 13, was sleeping at 1pm when a suspected electrical fire broke out in the home while his mother, Lindsay Bernard was at work.

The family’s pit bull, Ace, was able to alert Nick by licking his ace until he woke up.

“He was thankful that Ace entered his room and licked his face until he woke up,” Indianapolis Fire Department Capt. Rita Reith said in a news release. “The boy quickly covered his nose and mouth with his T-shirt and exited the rear of the house.”

“I couldn’t hear anything because I had my cochlear implants off. ... My dog Ace smelled it,” Nick told the IndyStar. “I just wanted to get out.”

The fire caused $US175,000 damage and is currently under investigation.

“(Nick) told firefighters that this was the first summer he was old enough to stay home alone and was excited to have reached that milestone,” Capt. Reith said. “He had just returned from summer camp on Sunday.”

It appears Ace was not so diligent in warning the family cat Pixie about the fire. She was caught inside but was located by a firefighter and is expected to make a full recovery after spending the night at the vet.
