Country Road has issued a product safety recall on a popular item due to fears of potential safety risks.

The product in question is popular gift item the Two-Tone Demm Mug, which the major clothing and homeware retailer is pulling after a serious issue was discovered.

It was found that a manufacturing defect in some of the mugs would cause them to “unexpectantly break” when hot liquid was poured into them, resulting in the base and body of the mug to separate.

The safety hazard identified was that this “can pose a significant risk, which can result in burns, lacerations and scalding”.

“Stop using the mug immediately,” Country Road warned customers.

Those who bought the mugs between November 1, 2023 to May 24, 2024 are urged to return their product to any Country Road store.

Affected customers will be given either a full refund or a replacement mug in any different design.

“Contact us via email or phone if you are unable to return the product, or if you have sold or gifted it to another person,” Country Road said.

The retailer is working in co-operation with the Australian Competition and Consumer Commissioner (ACCC) as a way of ensuring consumer safety.

The Two-Tone Demm Mug comes in four colours – sapphire, bermuda, lilac and dark olive.

Consumers who bought the product prior to the recall took to social media to report it was “a bit late notice”.

“Both my two-toned cracked when filling from kettle ages ago and one navy cracked in microwave with milk in it, I emailed CR both times, zero response! Not good enough,” one user wrote on the Country Road post.

“Mine did this the other day, was going to contact CR about this as so dangerous,” another commented.

The mug defects seem to not be limited to the Two-Tone Demm Mug series, as consumers voiced similar issues with other varieties such as the plain Demm version.

“This isn’t just the two tone! Three of mine have cracked!” one person commented.

“This happened to me last night. Brand new mug only used twice and I had just poured a hot tea and it poured out all over the bench! It wasn’t the two-toned mug but the plain Demm mug,” another added.
