A MANSION short-listed as a wedding venue by Kanye West and Kim Kardashian has become the world’s most expensive property after it was bought for a rumoured $A417 million.
The Chateau Louis XIV, named after the monarch who ruled France for 72 years, was completed in 2011 but the palatial pad has all the traditional features and decor of a fancy 17th Century estate.
Built across 57 acres of land between Versailles and Marly-le-Roi in France, the 50,000 square foot mega-home boasts 10 bedroom suites and a grand reception room.
Looming above the grand hall is a 16m high dome ceiling adorned by a handpainted fresco.
The mansion also houses a library, an enormous wine cellar, two ballrooms, a private cinema, an underground nightclub, a squash court, indoor and outdoor pools and an underground aquarium.
The stunning grounds of the estate feature glistening fountains, moats, walled gardens and a 2km maze.
Its hefty price tag trumps the previous record of £147 million ($A305 million) paid for a penthouse in London’s One Hyde Park last year.
The gorgeous chateau is the work of Saudi businessman Emad Khashoggi who employed 200 people to spend three years building the grand Versaille-style home on the outskirts of Paris.
There was no expense spared as Khashoggi’s company, Cogemad, sourced 13 different types of marble to make floors, mosaics, bathroom tiles and a statue of French king Louis XIV, while 15,000 sheets of gold were used to deck out the house’s lavish features.
It is thought there are also leather-embossed books on the shelves of its expansive library spanning a distance of 200 metres.
The opulent mansion, which sits on the former plot of a palace used as a retreat by Louis XIV, features 40 state-of-the-art surveillance cameras which can be viewed from around the world as well as a hi-tech alarm system.
Reality TV star Kardashian, who married rapper Kanye in May last year, considered the noble home as a possible wedding venue before settling on a 16th Century fortress in Florence, Italy, which cost them more than £212,000 ($441,000) to hire.
The bumper sale of Chateau Louis XIV is rumoured to have been sealed by Christie’s International Realty, Bloomberg reported today.
It is believed to have been snared by a Middle Eastern buyer.
There are more valuable homes in London but they haven’t been sold in recent years.
Neither Cogemad or Christie’s were available for comment.
