RETIREMENT can be hard for racing greyhounds but one Territory organisation is dedicated to supporting the gentle creatures.

Greyhound Rehoming Association NT helps foster retired Territory greyhounds.

GRANT volunteer Sarah Jackson is determined to spread awareness of the organisation’s foster initiative.

“Fostering is a great way to have a dog in your home for a few weeks, if you’re not ready to commit to a full-time pet,” she said.

“All our greyhounds come from the Darwin Greyhound Association.

We work with the trainers and once dogs retire, they come into our program.”

In 2018 more than 40 retired greyhounds were fostered through GRANT.

“Greyhounds are overlooked a lot. People associate them with racing and think they need a lot of exercise,” she said.

“It’s the complete opposite, they’re the most chilled dogs. All they need is a 20-minute walk and they’re content.

“We want more people to consider greyhounds as pets. They’re so chilled, they’re gentle giants.”

Three-year-old Violet is a sweet girl who’s great with kids and loves to play with big and small dogs. Visit grant.org.au to learn more about Violet.
