A chicken shredder from Kmart is causing a frenzy among shoppers, with many rushing to stores to grab the “genius” new kitchen gadget, which is just $5.

The nifty device is designed to make shredding cooked meat a breeze, and quietly arrived online before being discovered by eagle-eyed customers in stores.

It’s already been declared a “must-have” for meal preppers, parents who prepare their kids’ lunch boxes and those who regularly buy rotisserie chickens.

It’s simple to use – just place your cooked chicken inside, pop the lid on, and turn the handles side to side to shred the meat.

The non-slip base will keep everything stable while you work away, ensuring there’s no mess.

One happy customer, known as Foodie Mumma Ren, shared the find on Facebook, simply writing, “$5 at Kmart.”

Her post quickly racked up over 500 comments from her followers who were equally as excited.

One user summed up the overarching sentiment perfectly: “Do I need it? Probably not. Do I want it? Absolutely!”

“OMG, no way!” said someone else.

“No more burning my fingers trying to shred hot chicken,” a third said, “and using two forks takes five times longer than hand shredding.”

Others mentioned they’d seen a similar tool go viral online and were glad Kmart had brought out a budget version.

“Good job Kmart … this is wildly popular. Seems to really work too,” one said.

However, some people thought it was a “useless appliance”, a “waste of plastic”, and a “nightmare to clean.”

“How lazy can we get?” one user asked, before plenty of others shared alternative methods to shred chicken.

“Two forks does the job,” said one.

And another claimed that using a hand mixer and bowl also works.

But people pointed out that the device would be great for people who have disabilities and issues with dexterity, grip and strength.

Also, there’s nothing wrong with wanting to cut a few corners when cooking, as many on TikTok pointed out.

“Run don’t walk to Kmart Australia to grab this $5 chicken shredder,” said @kathybennett0. “So quick, so easy, so convenient. Preps my chicken so fast!”

“Super easy to clean,” she added, noting that it’s also dishwasher safe.
